MEGA STORM OF JULY 12, 2015
BRAINERD, MINNESOTA

It all started Sunday evening around 7 pm cdt. A Mesoscale Convective System (severe thunderstorm complex) was approaching Crow Wing County Minnesota from the west at 35 mph with tops of the storms at 65,000 feet according to radar which meant the downdraft from the storm traveled 12.3 miles to the surface and fanned out in fingers of destructive wind gusts. I estimated wind gust of 80 mph at my location at 733 pm cdt. Numerous 1.5 to 2 foot diameter trees were felled in an area 7 miles wide and 10 miles long. Most trees were topped 45 to 50 foot high rather than uprooted. 12 trees fell on my property, 2 of which damaged my house and garage. The National Weather Service Survey Team from Duluth Minnesota determined the widespread damage resulted from straight line wind rather than being tornadic in nature. It is quite possible and probable, wind gusts were much higher in other locations, possibly reaching 100 mph in spots. The state of Minnesota labeled Crow Wing County a level two disaster area as a result. Amazingly, there were no reports of any injuries or deaths. See photos and videos below.
